Brief Outline: Students draw pictures while their teammates try to guess what they are drawing.

Materials Needed:

  • Blank paper: Several sheets for each team
  • Markers: One for each team

    Detailed Explanation:

    1. Students make groups of 5-6.
    2. Each team has several sheets of paper and a marker. The ALT and the JTE stand in front of the class each holding a list of English words, concealed so that only the first word is visible. Some suggestions for words include: pen, cat, table tennis, breakfast, America, weather, music, listen, time, friend, under, thank, etc.
    3. When the JTE/ALT says “GO!”, one student from each team runs to the JTE/ALT, and the ALT/JTE shows him or her the first word on his or her list.
    4. The students run back to their teams and draw pictures to illustrate the words while their teammates guess the words.
    5. As soon the team guesses the word correctly, another team member must run to the JTE/ALT and tell him or her the word. If the guess is correct, the ALT/JTE shows the student the next word on the list.
    6. The second team members run back to their teams and draw pictures to illustrate the second words. This continues until the teams guess all of the words on the list.

    Variations:

    • The students play until one team has guessed all of the words, but I think it’s better if you let the game continue until every team finishes.
    • The ALT can score each team from 6 to 1 points, from fastest to slowest, if all teams are allowed to finish.
    • The students in each team must decide on team order before starting the game, so that everyone - and not just the people guessing correctly - get a chance to play.
    • You can give extra points for the best drawings. This is especially funny if you have asked them to draw the JTE/ALT.
