Brief Outline: Students compose a series of questions to try and guess who the thief of the chocolate cake the ALT made was.

Materials Needed:

  • Thief worksheet: One per group

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Students make groups of 4-5.
  2. Hand out the worksheets. Groups decide on an order within their groups of who comes to ALT or JTL to ask the questions.
  3. As a class, practice questions one and two, and the ALT/JTL answers. After that, from student one, students must formulate their own questions and ask the teacher.
  4. Game ends when all the groups have guessed the thief’s identity.

Variations and Options:

  • For high level students, they must remember the question PERFECTLY. For lower-level, they can bring the worksheet with them to help them out. You can also tweak this for your class, so that if one group in particular is wining, make it harder for them, so the other groups can catch up.
  • Students work in set pairs instead of in groups.

Tips or Cautions:

  • Get students to whisper their questions so that other groups cannot hear it, or the teacher’s response.

  • (Nov 10, 2010) suimi said: The first time I did this, the students were clever and wrote out the minimum number of questions needed in order to find the answer (you can eliminate all but the thief within 4 questions). I then had to persuade them to write all the questions anyway for practice. So the second time, I had them fold down the top of the sheet so they could not see the grid, and I wrote the 'facts' e.g. likes sushi, writes haiku, etc on the blackboard. They then had to write out and ask me all of the questions, before finally unfolding the sheet and finding the answer. Good fun though!
