Web Quest Challenge

Submitted byRaegina Taylor     Borrowed from: Stacia Wagner

Brief Outline:
The mission of this internet adventure is to complete a series of online challenges designed specifically for Japanese junior high school students.

Materials Needed:

  • Computers with internet access
  • Web Quest worksheet
  • The Web Quest webpage - click the box to the right

Teaching Suggestions:

  • A Web Quest, for those who don’t know, is an online inquiry-oriented lesson format in which most or all the information that learners work with comes from the web.
  • This quest is stretched out over 2-3 classes, depending on the students' English ability.  One class period can be spent in the computer lab gather information and one can be spent in the classroom writing about their discoveries.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Students work in pairs or groups of three to complete the worksheet.
  2. Explain to them that it is not important for them to understand every webpage they search, just search for the information – numbers, words they can read, etc.
  3. Give them the worksheet and turn them loose.
  4. Once the group has completed the Web Quest, have them type up or write out their findings and affix it to poster paper to display publicly around the school or the English bulletin board.

Tips or Cautions:

  • Some students will not participate properly. To avoid this, you or the JTL choose the groups.
