Spelling Challenge

Submitted by: Joyce P. Le     Borrowed or inspired from: N/A     Date added: 02-23-08

Brief Outline:  Students improve their spelling while having fun with English words.

Materials Needed

  • SpellingChallenge worksheet - one for each student
  • New Horizon English 3rd year textbook

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Part 1 - Is the spelling correct?: Students look at questions 113 and check the spelling. Students may use their textbook or dictionary. If the word is correct, then they will write the first letter inside the parentheses on the message line equivalent to the question #. If the word is not spelled correctly, students should write the correct spelling and use the second letter inside the parentheses on the message line equivalent to the question #. They should be able to find the hidden message easily.
  2. Part 2 - Fun Facts: Students will use their textbook as reference and answer the 3 questions.
  3. Part 3 - Double words: From A ~ Z, students will fill in the blanks by writing words that are created from 2 different words. There are more than enough words for each alphabet so encourage students to try to think or use their textbooks to find the words instead of copying off of each other. Teachers should only use the answer sheet for part 3 as reference because it only compiles of a list of the words that are in the 3rd year New Horizon textbook.
  4. The answers to all the problems are in the attachement.
