 Ball & Chain
Brief Outline: Students toss two balls attached to each other around the room while asking questions. Materials Needed: - 2 balls – preferably soft in nature.
- String – it needs to be able to attach to the balls.
Teaching Suggestions: - You should be able to find elastic balls attached to a thin rope, similar to a Koosh ball, at the 100 yen shop. Tie additional string to the end of each of the ropes enable the students to throw the ball farther.
Detailed Explanation: - Start by you throwing the JTE one of the balls while holding onto the other ball. Then, ask the JTE a question and they must answer it.
- You proceed to toss your ball to a student and the JTE must ask that student a question. After the students answers the question, the JTE tosses their ball to a student and the previous question-answering student must then form a question for the new ball-receiving student.
- Continue for the entire warm-up or until the rope wraps around a student’s neck and starts to suffocate them, at which time, seek medical attention.
Tips or Cautions: - If a student dodges a ball instead of catching it, they automatically become the ‘new receiver’.
- Students might always throw to the same gender. The problem is not that students don’t want to throw to the opposite sex; they just need a reason to throw because they are coming into puberty and discovering the differences of their bodies. To alleviate this problem:
- Stagger the throw: boy, girl, boy, girl, etc
- Use a coin: heads = boys / tails = girls.
- On each turn, have the JTE draw from two playing cards -- queen = girls / king = boys.
