Body Ball
Brief Outline: Hitting students and teachers is wrong, eh? Well, this game not only encourages it, but students review recent vocabulary while committing this atrocious act. Detailed Explanation: - While the idea of this game sounds a bit crazy, it definitely catches your students’ attention.
- Draw a body on the chalkboard and draw big squares next to certain body parts.
- Have a deck of cards ready with the vocabulary they are currently learning. Select a student to come and chose a card. If the class can read and repeat the word three times, then place the card in one of the squares on the board.
- Then, the student has the chance to throw a very soft toy or ball at that body part. This is just the warm-up to the real fun!
- After two or three cards are chosen, start attaching the cards to your own body and allowing the student a chance of hitting the card on your body. If they can do it, the class receives a point and minus a point if they miss. So, what do these points go towards? I have no clue…this is just a fun warm-up game. I’m sure you can think of something.
- If they are truly horrible throwers, try giving them three tries. You might find that they surprisingly never hit the correct area.
Variations & Options: - Have your students make and use paper airplanes.
- If you don’t want to use your own body, affix the cards around the room or have a student volunteer to become the human target.
- If you want to practice grammar instead of vocabulary, simply write numbers on the cards and ask the class a grammar-specific question. The student who answers it is given the chance to throw their balls or fly the paper airplane at the number card you decide.
