Brief Outline:  Students work to make as many words as possible from a 3x3 grid on the chalkboard.

Materials Needed:

  • A piece of paper for each student

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Teach as a warm-up to a writing class, or a class based on vocabulary.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Draw a 3x3 square on the board. Ask students randomly to give you a letter to fill up the grid.  See the grid to the right.

  2. Give students a time limit to come up with as many words as possible.
  3. You can have students report back on the words they made to a ‘vocabulary bank’, which is contributed by the entire class.

Variations:

  • Easy - have any word length ok.
  • Difficult - words containing 3+ letters OR all words must contain the middle letter in the grid .
  • Phonics - students can have any combination- as long as they can pronounce it!
