Brief Outline: Dondake is said when the speaker is surprised about something said or done. It basically means Really?!?!  In this dondake warmup students blindly bet money they can spell words correctly.

Materials Needed:

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Dondake definition: This catch-all exclamation of surprise/disbelief/reproach arose from the Shinjuku 2-chome gay community and was popularized by Ikko, a popular transvestite TV personality. Dondake can be used in a wide variety of situations, sort of like “Really?!” or “No way!” Usually said with a slight rising intonation and seasoned with whiny sarcasm.23
  2. Give each student a worksheet.
  3. Have the students write random dollar amounts from 1-5 down the ‘MONEY’ column.
  4. ALTJTE choose 10 random English words for the students to spell. If they spell the word correctly, they receive the amount. If they spell it incorrectly, they lose the amount.
