Slaps

Brief Outline: Students slap each other’s hands for not speaking English.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Students get into pairs standing and facing each other. They put their hands together, as if they are praying, but point their fingers so they are pointing towards the other person. The tips of each of their fingertips are touching only on the middle finger.
  2. The play Janken to see which person goes first. That person has to talk ONLY in English for an interval of your choice – 30 seconds, 1 minute, etc.
  3. If they pause too long or if they use Japanese, the other person gets to slap their hand. Do a demo with your JTE. Explain the topic can be about anything – self-introductions, where they live, age, etc.

Variations & Options:

  • For lower level classes, allow them to use sentences that use the same grammar pattern – I like cheese. I like bread. I like natto.

Tips or Cautions:

  • It gets pretty noisy and sometimes you can’t tell if they aren’t using English.
