Elem Topics Numbers Teaching Suggestions 日本語 Numbers Teaching Suggestions Say any number within the targeted number range and have the students clap that number of times. After some practice, reverse it by clapping a certain number of times and having the students tell you how many times you clapped. Then, let some students come to the front and try the clapping in front of their peers. Peer-to-peer teaching sometimes produces interesting results.
Counting On Fingers: Ask the students how they count to 10 on their fingers; they use the American Sign Language approach. Show them how different people from other countries count from 1-10. Whether you count with one or two hands, or whether your counting is the same as the students, showing them a different way to count will keep their interest.
Math: Use simple math problems to review numbers in your target range. This was so popular at one school, the Japanese teacher taught his next math class using English numbers because he liked how his students responded to the English math problems. Use all the symbols -- plus, minus, times and divide.
Mnemonics: Mnemonics basically means a process of remembering things by linking them to memories or things already known. For more information on mnemonics, click here. Teach 1-11, not 1-10. Students already know the number eleven because of the convenient store, 7-11. Students can easily be taught 30-39 because of the ice cream shop, Baskin Robbins, but in Japan it's called 'thirty-one.' From 31, you can teach the other numbers in the thirty range. They students will probably already know the number 50 because of they know the phrase 50/50. Use this as your mnemonic aid to teach the rest of the numbers in the fifty range. For the numbers between 40-49 and 60-99, put the letter 'T' in between the double-digit, and simply each number individually. For example, the number 64 becomes "six-T-four."
Writing Numbers on the Chalkboard: While practicing counting in English, choose students to also practice writing the numbers on the chalkboard. This encourages class participation and keeps the students interested in the lesson. Have the students concentrate on the stroke order of the number. This will help challenge the students and keep their interest. However, check with the HRT to ensure you are not contradicting what the teacher has already taught. When choosing students to write on the board, get a little crazy! Try little things that will keep their attention, like striking your fingers together as if you are lighting a match while making a 'match-striking' sound. Then, start making 'beeping' sounds while pointing at various students. Start slowing your beeps as you're pointing becomes slower. When you come to a complete stop, make a 'flat-line' sound. Pick 3-4 students each time to draw on the board. Add a timer. Start counting backwards from a chosen number ensures keeps the class moving and solves the problem of students erasing the number and trying to write the number perfectly.
